As a female DJ/producer in a seriously male-dominated industry, I often look for inspiration from other female musicians. There is certainly no shortage of inspirational, phenomenal female musical artists, and while I could go on for days, there is one woman whose groundbreaking contributions to the world of music leave me in absolute awe. Her creativity and boldness are unparalleled, and her actions have influenced me to always try to think outside the box. Missy Elliott is, in my opinion, one of the most creative and inspirational minds in the music industry.
The winner of five Grammy awards, Elliott’s accolades speak for themselves. But that’s just scratching the surface of her accomplishments and great contributions to music and popular culture. The greatest thing about Missy Elliott is the fact that she truly is such an uncompromisingly unique and creative person. From late adolescence into my teenage years and beyond, Missy Elliott transformed the way I experienced music. In a world where so many artists strive to fit a certain image and style, Missy Elliott stands apart from the crowd by marching to the beat of her own drum. Her songs are all overflowing with her signature quirky style, and to this day, I have yet to see another artist hold a candle to any of her music videos.
I spent many afternoon after school in my teenage years posted up by the television for hours in hopes that MTV would air one of her music videos. Elliott’s unique persona is captured flawlessly in her music videos, and her videos generated a lot of buzz because they were unlike anything anyone had ever seen before in any genre of music. “Gossip Folks”, “Get Ur Freak On”, and “Work It” easily stand out as some of the most iconic songs and music videos of my time for their originality and genius. Missy Elliott proved that you don’t need to conform to anyone’s standards to be successful. There are thousands of famous talented musicians out there, but very few artists that truly stand out like Missy Elliott. Missy Elliott’s work is infused with the kind of eccentric creativity that truly advances the world of music and she will forever be one of my biggest musical influences.
