I`m extremely proud to introduce this talented new artist called RAY BLK who recently topped the list of BBC's Sound of 2017 after releasing her second EP called "Durt" last year, which has been well received. The South London singer-songwriter and rapper follows in the footsteps of previous acts Years & Years, Adele, Sam Smith, HAIM, Jack Garratt and Ellie Goulding who have all managed to top the list as well and went on to have successful careers.
“I feel so honoured to have topped the list this early in my career and join such an incredible alumni of winners. Thank you so much to the BBC and all the voters! I’m particularly proud to be a part of this year’s list as it’s full of so much talent, some of whom are independent artists like myself which I really hope inspires the next generation of artists.”
She added that she wants to use her music to "empower women to live life as they want. There are so many societal pressures on women, on how we should behave, and they're all based on male privilege."
BBC does a great job at putting new talent on our radars as I had to check her out with the quickness once I saw her on the list and I was not disappointed at all, she has such a rich and raw voice and a very direct approach to her musical style which draws so more comparison to Lauryn Hill, Nicole Wray, Mary J Blige and Erykah Badu.
