Album Review: Leela James - 'Did It for Love'

R&B songstress Leela James just dropped her newest album titled 'Did It For Love' which follows up her 2014 album “Fall For You”, it sees her exploring more and more layers of what makes and breaks a relationship deal.

She kicks off the album with “Hard For Me” with a strong opening number which comes in a form of a slow-tempo number that finds her singing about being deeply in love with her man but the relationship overall is toxic as it sees her giving her all to a man who doesn`t really appreciate her nor treats her with respect.

“Don't Mean A Thang” is a smooth guitar-piano driven number that sees her addressing a topic that we all dealt with, where your partner is saying a lot of sweet nothings but action speaks volumes. Words mean nothing if you ain`t putting the work in to make it to reality.

“Don't Want You Back” is about refusing to ever go back to an relationship that ended badly and looking at it as lesson learned and moving on forward to better shit: “I don't want your love, you can keep your love, cause someone else is living here, someone else is saying my name. Baby, he's cooking me breakfast, winning, dinning, flowers for no reason. He's doing what he's supposed to do, It could've been you. You had a good thing, you had a good thing and you let it go..”
“I Remember” is a sweet slow jam that has James reminiscing on the good times of her current relationship and wonders where did the love and the intimacy gone and how she will find a way to go on with this relationship, even though she still loves him.

“Good To Love You” is funky mid-tempo number that sees her teaming up with Dave Hollister as they sing about falling deeply in love and embracing each other as they showcase the good side of love, “the day I laid my eyes on you, it`s like I already know it`s a one-time kind of love”. She follows it up with “There 4 U” a groovy drum driven number that finds her singing about being her man`s superwoman because whenever he needs her she will be there with the quickness and have his back.

She declare her love for her man on “This Day Is For You”  and dedicates a special day to bare her love for him and thank him for being such a blessing to her life. The track has such a old skool vibe to it that works amazingly well with her soulful vocals. “Take Me” is one of the biggest highlights on the album, it`s a heartfelt love ballad where she beautifully sings about being deeply in love and being willing to be everything for him as she knows she is a woman of rich quality and will give her all to him, if he just takes her.

“All Over Again” is a piano driven number back up with some string work, she talks about falling in love with her all over again as their love is renewed and is deeper and richer, “Today I fall in love with you all over again, just like the very first time you touch my skin. So caught up in this moment I don`t want it to end, my lover , my friend.”  “Our Love” features the same theme as she sings about experiencing a rare and real kind of love.

She closes the album with the title track “Did It For Love” which talks about being caught up in love and being blind to the truth of the relationship that she was dealing with a cheater and lair, now she sees how far went in it and knows her intentions were true on her side and she loved her through and through.

The album overall is great, it has a very mature outlook on love and her vocals are so soulfully rich and her whole approach is stunning, I highly recommend y`all to purchase it .
