It`s been almost 9 years since Jennifer Hudson dropped her self-titled debut album which managed to peak at number two on the charts and also win her Grammy. The album is still her best musically offering to date as it was beautifully crafted and not forced, one of the standout tracks has got be a collaboration between her and Fantasia called "I'm His Only Woman" which was written by Missy Elliott, co-written by Jazmine Sullivan and produced by Jack Splash.
The song features a very classic soul appeal about it as it`s very reminiscent of Shirley Brown`s classic record "Woman To Woman" which earned her a Grammy Award nomination in 1975, that this song also managed to get in 2009. It finds these two extremely talented vocalists battling it out as they fight over a man who clearly playing the two of them but they are too busy addressing each other than dealing with him but I`m so here for it all.
The lyrics are raw and deep "Baby now that he's with you, tell me why he call me boo. Yes he played you like a fool cause he lying to you. I'm just trying to talk to you baby, woman to woman., like two adults. Not trying to start no commotion but the man you claim is yours, says he's mine and he loves me too. Same promises to you, the honest truth, yes we both are fools.." and their vocal delivery is solid and passionate and the production is stellar back-up by vocals from Sullivan and Elliott.
Live performance of the song was a slayage, check it out below.
