I often come across lists about shows that we watched as kids. I’m a a true 90s kid and we had awesome TV shows. I guess, I’ve always been a TV junkie. So here is a list of my favorite shows and if you’re reading this and you’re thinking ” I totally forgot about that show,” go to YouTube. There you’ll find opening themes, full episodes and a lot more. I checked for many of the shows and if my thesis wasn’t waiting, I’d spend all day and night in front of my computer, wallowing in memories. Let me know what you watched as a child by commenting below. Let’s all remind each other of shows that made our childhood truly awesome.
90s TV shows
1. The Torkelsons / Almost Home
I might have forgotten about this great show, if I hadn’t written it all down, as a kid. When I read through my notebook, I remembered, googled it and watched all episodes on YouTube. Now I know, why I always wanted a bench in front of a big window in my room. Dorothy Jane’s favorite spot. I won’t be talking to the man in the moon though.
2. Under the Umbrella Tree
Iggy, Gloria and Jacob were just sooo cool and the characters taught us kids important life lessons. I wish, I could be the only human being living together with puppets.
3. Ocean Girl
Neri was sooo cool. She was like a mermaid but with actual legs. She could outswim everyone and talk to whales. And yes, she was sooo pretty. Furthermore, I always found the underwater world very fascinating. And ORCA (Oceanic Research Centre Australia) looked sooo cool. I always wanted to live there. With these cool cabins and sliding doors.
4. Barney
“I love you, you love me. We’re a happy family. With a great big hug and kiss from me to you. Won’t you say you love me too.” Barney is the coolest dinosaur ever. And Baby Bop was just the cutest. We always rented Barney movies when we went to a store called Smith. I loved that store! I still have a little Barney figure and I thinks it was a great show for kids. I’m still a fan of everything that involves dancing and singing.
5. Micky Mouse Club
Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Goslin….enough said!
6. Fraggle Rock
I especially remember those colorful creatures building strange constructions inside their cave, out of clear sticks. Weren’t they able to eat them? Or did somebody else eat them? And they lived beneath some craftsman who had a dog.
7. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Sometimes, they show re-runs and even though the special effects are hideous, I love it. This show was soooo cool. There are still Power Ranger shows today, but they are too modern. I’m talking about Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini and Billy. And not to forget that creepy talking head in a tank Zordon. When I was younger, I loved the yellow ranger and today, I love the pink one. Can’t wait to get my hands on a costume, one day. I remember Mc Donalds having Power Ranger stuff in their happy meals. We had a morpher with golden coins and I remember having the yellow ranger with megazord. Oh, how I miss the good old times. GO GO Power Rangers!
8. Rugrats
Angelica was the coolest. But I never understood why she had this ugly Cynthia doll?! Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil. They were all really adorable. Tommy was a great leader and they experienced cool adventures. Unbelievable though that Chuckie never died of a heart attack. He was sooo afraid of everything. PS: RAPTOR! Awwwwwww! ;)
9. Doug
Doug Funnie. I always hoped for him and Patty Mayonnaise to become a couple. The show showed how difficult it is in teenage years and that dating takes some effort…and courage. I liked him especially for always writing in his journal. And he had a dog.
10. Bananas in Pajamas
Now this is a show I really miss. “Bananas in pajamas are coming down the stairs, bananas in pajamas are coming down in pairs. Bananas in pajamas are chasing teddy bears…” B1, B2 and the teddys living next to a beach. I really loved that show and I still want them as stuffed animals.
11. Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Magic always works for me. Salem the talking cat was the best. And when Sabrina and Harvey FINALLY decided to spend their lives with each other in the very last episode, I was so relieved, even though they were leaving on a motor cycle and Harvey was obviously thinking he was Danny Zuko.
12. Sailor Moon
I just recently bought the first seasonn on DVD and realized that every episode is basically the same. Bunny Tsukino (German version, Serena Tsukino in the English version), turns into Sailor Moon and has to fight everything evil. I really don’t know why they chose her because she is clumsy as hell and she cries all the time. Luckily her fellow warriors are more sophisticated. And when everything seems like it’s over, the oh so handsome Tuxedo mask appears and saves the day.
13. Clueless
when I was 13, I watched the movie for the first time with my best friend. From there on, she was Dionne and I was Cher. Of course I loved the show, even though I was a little sad that Cher wasn’t played by Alicia Siverstone. A show about rich Beverly Hills kids, always dressed in bright colors. I would murder for Cher’s room, bath and closet!
14. Beverly Hills 90210
And I mean the old series. Gladly, they are currently showing re-runs in Germany and I still love to watch the show. Brenda and Brandon, Kelly, Dylan, Steve, Donna, David, Andrea trying to grow up, although they already seemed pretty grown-up to me. It was just a pretty cool show and it still is.
15. Clarissa explains it all
Her room was cool. Her style was cool. The fact that a boy was able to enter her room by placing a latter in front of her window and climbing through was questionable but pretty cool, too. And she probably had the most annoying on-screen-brother ever. Ferg-face was terrible. Once, I made myself a peace sign out of neon pink cardboard to hang on my door. Why? Because Clarissa had one in her room, just a different color.
16. Full House
“You got it, dude!” Great family TV show and it’s still a lot of fun to watch. And Michelle was one of the cutest babies, ever.
17. Daria
I was always very much into everything made by MTV and Daria was really different, but pretty cool. She was like the opposite of me but oh well. Different is always good for me.
18. Family Matters
Imagine having Steve Urkel as your neighbor, who just walks into your house whenever he feels like it. Especially while being a girl in your teenage years. Poor Laura Winslow. But the interaction between Carl and Steve was always very funny. I wonder though, if the kid has back and nose problems, today, from all the strange walking and grunting after laughing. PS: “Did I do that???”
19. Moesha
I love Brandy as an artist and I loved Brandy in that show. But I never thought Moesha and Q make a cute couple. The show had great music and also great guests and I would love to re-watch some episodes. Furthermore, she kept a journal. I always sympathize with those characters. And her friends are just hilarious.
20. Dawsons Creek
And here we have another teenage character who’s room you can enter through the window. What did they’re parents think of that??? But we all wanted Joey and Dawson to become a real couple. It was so cute how they shared they’re first kiss. But if I remember it right, Dawson had something going on with Jen and Joey and Pacey developed an interesting relationship and everything was always a huge drama. The setting of the show was beautiful, though.
21. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Before vampires were able to walk around in bright daylight or sparkled in the sun, the show showed real vampires. They lived in the dark, looked pretty scary and were supposed to be killed. I never saw Edward Cullen’s face change into something more vampiresque. Buffy was tough and strong, at least until she met Angel and fell for him. I guess there is just something about Vampires no girl can resist.
22. Dinosaurs
A family of humanized Dinosaurs with a baby from the devil. That baby is so mean and awfully cruel toward his farther. But as he always says: “I’m the baby, gotta love me.”
23. Singled Out
That was such a fun dating show and the gorgeous Jenny McCarthy was always great to watch. So funny and ridiculous and really fast. If that show would still be on today, I would totally take part. That show makes “The Bachelor” look sooo boring.
24. V.I.P.
Pamela Anderson as the always sexy Vallery Irons. She didn’t know anything about being a bodyguard but of course, she was always there when she was needed and somehow managed to save the day. I remember replaying that show with my Barbie dolls. I even cut a black-haired Barbie’s hair to make her look like Nikki. That’s how much I loved that show. And I made my parents record every episode.
25. S Club 7
“Don’t stop, never give up. Hold your head high and reach the top. Let the world see what you have got. Bring it all back to you.” Who remembers that song? I definitely do because I was a huge fan. Even though looking back that show was very weird, I watched all the episodes. And made my parents record them all, again. The songs were catchy and it was all really funny. Jo was always my favorite.
26. Student Bodies
Why did I love this show? Right, because it was about teens making a school newspaper. And since I’m totally into this, of course this show was totally for me. Furthermore, I thought the cartoons were really funny.
27. The Munsters
I never understood why Marilyn, a normal human being, lived with them. I mean they were great but still, I found it strange. And I never understood how these creatures could live among normal people. Monsters living a normal life was pretty unusual. But they were cool. And I loved the black and white.
28. Scooby Doo
The show occasionally still runs today and it’s always great to watch how the group tries to solve mysteries. And I’m totally with Shaggy and Scooby and all the eating. And did Daphne and Fred ever officially become a couple? I can’t remember.
29. Talespin, Darkwing Duck, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, DuckTales
Some of the most awesome Disney shows ever. I loved them all sooo much as a child and I would love to re-watch all of them. The characters were sooo cool.
30. Pepper Ann
She looked hideous but she and her friends were fun to watch. How cool it would’ve been, if some of her fantasies would’ve come true.
31. Charmed
A true 90s girl was a fan of witches and the Halliwell sisters kicked ass. Phoebe was my favorite!
32. I Dream of Jeannie
I know, technically this is definitely not a 90s show, but that’s when I watched it. A few years ago, I even dressed myself in a costume like Jeannie and I absolutely loved it. She was so sweet, pretty and witty. She did not behave like a classic Dschinn and turned her master’s life upside-down.
33. Care Bears
Awwwww – these little, furry friends are just adorable and they use their powers for something good. I especially love the movie and the other animals that have powers, as well. And I have to say, Beastly was a great character. My favorites are Cheer Bear, Grumpy Bear and Baby Hugs & Tugs.
34. Ren & Stimpy
One of these shows I didn’t quite get. Pretty sick characters, and strange content but I watched it from time to time. I didn’t watch Beavis and Butthead, though. Those two were just too much to handle.
35. Boy Meets World
As long as Corey and Topanga ended up being together forever, everything was good. A great show every teenager can relate to. I’m curious how Girls Meets World will turn out.
36. Looney Tunes / Tiny Toons
Oh, how I loved all of them. Bugs, Lola, Daffy, Taz, Tweety and the rest. I still have stuffed animals. I didn’t love them as much as I loved Disney but still, I was a big fan and still am. And I don’t have to tell you that Space Jam is one of my favorite movies.
37. 7th Heaven
Who would have guessed that Mary Camden would end up marrying Justin Timberlake? It’s one of these shows that always has an important message which is something I miss a little in todays shows. And let me just say that for the daughter of a reverend, Lucy dated and made out with like a million guys but definitely married the cutest. She was always my favorite character because she was a lot like me. Completely crazy but with a biiig heart!
38. Party of Five
This was about family and about having to grow up, really fast. 5 children and no parents creates a pretty sad undertone. This show also presents Neve Campbell in something other than SCREAM.
39. Home Improvement
First of all, every teenage girl was absolutely in love with Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Second of all, ever teenage boy was in love with Tim’s female assistants, including Pamela Anderson. And can someone tell me why we never got to see Al?
40. Baywatch
Sunshine. Beach. Ocean. Pamela Anderson. Enough said! I still have my Baywatch Barbie dolls.
41. Nightrider
I chose to list it because my brother used to watch this show, all the time. I was not a huge fan but I am sure that many, many were and still are. A talking car just wins over, everyone.
42. The Nanny
Who wouldn’t want to have Fran Fine as their nanny? I mean she is loud, tacky, crazy but you just have to love her. I still watch re-runs, today because it will always be funny to watch Maxwell and Fran pretend not to have feelings for each other. To watch Niles and Cici toss the jokes and at some point fall in love. I still find it hard to watch the end of the last episode, where Fran is standing inside the empty house and thinks about all the things that happened during her years living there.
43. Roseanne
The Conners were loud, crazy and also pretty normal. A working-class family facing all kinds of problems the world has to offer. Money problems, growing children with a lot of different issues, health, relationships and everything else. Once you’ve gotten used to them, you just have to love the whole family.
44. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Young Will Smith and his colorful outfits, his Philly attitude and great sense of humor. Bel Air just felt so totally wrong for him, but he managed to find his way and place. I loved Carlton’s dancing, Hilary and her missing brain, the moment when Ashley is all grown up and pretty hot, and of course Geoffrey the butler. A funny butler is always great for a show. And don’t we all know all the words to the song? “Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside-down…”
45. Tom & Jerry
I used to watch this show a lot, but believe me when I say that one episode per day is enough. My brother bought the dvd box and I started to re-watch the episodes. It’s always the same and they don’t even talk. It get’s totally annoying after a few episodes.
46. Friends
This is absolutely one of the best shows ever made. I have all seasons on dvd and no matter how many times I watch all those episodes, they crack me up, every time. Great characters, great jokes, great everything. How could they ever stop after 10 seasons??? But at least, it ended with Ross and Rachel being together because, let’s be honest, it’s the only thing that mattered.
47. Teletubbies
I might have been a little old when the show aired, but I never cared about anything concerning age. That baby in the sun was one of the cutest I have ever seen. Their house and the surrounding looked pretty cool and they were so bright and colorful. Of course, Laa-Laa was my favorite and until today, I still want a Teletubbie doll.
48. Rocko’s Moder Life
It was one of these shows that was pretty disgusting but as a kid, I watched it, anyway. And in case you wonder what kind of animal Rocko actually is, according to wikipedia, he is “an anthropomorphic, Australian-immigrant wallaby”.
49. Animaniacs
When you love the Looney Tunes, you gotta love the Animaniacs, as well. Cute little animated creatures with a ton of crazy ideas in their heads. And Dot is just adorable. The show was pretty funny and showed a lot of different elements. And I always found it fascinating, when characters like these lived among humans. Doesn’t make sense but who cares.
50. Step by Step
Patchwork-families are often pretty difficult to handle, especially when they are as different as the Foster’s and Lambert’s. And what made it even worse? They had to share rooms. I always loved their typical American kitchen. It was a little old school, but it just screamed family. It was nice to watch all the characters develop into liking each other.
51. The Cosby Show
I know the show was mostly shown in the 80s, but like most of television shows, they get broadcasted over and over again. The Huxtables were likable and had to deal with normal problems. Rudy was the coolest and of course Cliff, played by the amazing Bill Cosby, was always good at making people laugh.
52. Recess
A show created by Disney has to be a show I like. And until today, I like animated shows and movies. What I liked most about it is the fact that the main clique consists of completely different characters and that they plan everything together. School life is depicted in a positive way and not shown as the typical group gathering where the jocks don’t talk to nerds and so on. They deal with normal school problems and always find a solution to save themselves from Randall and Miss Finster. I always liked Spinelly because she was pretty tough. And the four Ashleys kinda remind me of the plastics. Such a typical girly clique.
53. Peanuts
I just googled the show again and found out that the Peanuts was not an actual TV show but in my memory it was. I watched them many times and they were adorable. Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Woodstock, Marcie, Peppermint Patty and of course, Linus and his blanket. I’d love to re-watch the TV-specials.
54. MTV Cribs
This show inspired me so many times. Celebrities showed their cribs and it’s amazing to see what you can do when you have a lot of money. I remember the huuuge bed in Shaquille O’Neal’s house, Beyoncé and her cloud painted ceiling, and someone had this HUUUUUGE open living room which was all white and a huge palm tree was included. It looked absolutely incredible. To be honest, this show is responsible for my name “Hailey Jade Ryan”. I always dreamt of doing my own MTV Cribs one day and my name had to sound good when I say “Hi, I’m Hailey Jade Ryan, welcome to my crib!”
55. The Flinstones
YABBA DABBA DOOOOOO!!!! Imagine people really living like that in the Stone Age. How cool would that be? Cars with no engines, rocks instead of paper and dinosaurs used for all kinds of different things. But of course, they had television. Now THAT makes sense.
56. Goosebumps / Are you Afraid of the Dark
Two shows full of mystery. I thought they were pretty good and pretty scary. I loved the green mist coming from under the door that led to the basement. Was that actually in a trailer or was that part of an episode? It’s the first thing that comes to my mind. But until today, I would probably be too afraid to be part of something like “The Midnight Society.” I’m such a fraidy cat.
57. Aaaahhh!!! Real Monsters
I guess Nickelodeon had it going for tv shows with strange characters. Again, a little disgusting but it worked. Then again, I watched pretty much everything.
58. Legends of the Hidden Temple
The studio looked soooo cool and competition shows are always fun. So adventurous like an Indiana Jones movie.
59. The Magic School bus
I wish I would have been on a school bus like that. On thoes trips, you learn so much more and it is more exciting than to sit in class and listen to your teacher. And of course, in all political correctness, children of different ethnicities were included into the show.
60. Salute Your Shorts
Until today, I wish, I had spent a summer at camp. It always looks like so much fun on tv.
