Hello everyone, I wrote this post today to shed some light on some of my favorite female rappers that went all the way in as they delivered some heavy bars and I also wanted to educated some readers on their impact and celebrate them as they have paved way for many others to do what they do today and I love female rappers as they go the extra mile to showcase their love of hip-hop and it`s culture.
Lil' Kim is not the Queen of Rap for nothing, she has change the music industry with four impactful albums that saw her displaying alot of growth with each album and celebrating elements that hip-hop was born on and also she used her work to celebrate her sexuality and take power from men and have a mentality that kinda says "You don`t fuck me, I fuck you". Her flow is so smooth, bold, fiery and impressively aggressive that displays so beautifully on her classic track "Drug" off her debut album "Hard Core" that broke barriers for women to rap about sex in the same tone as a male rapper would about females, simply empowering women to own their sexuality.
Brooklyn rapper Foxy Brown made her mark on the music industry with her debut 1996 debut "Ill Na Na" at the age of 16 years old, she was so raw and rough and had a great appeal to her that alot of people were drawn to her sound. She like Lil Kim empowered women to be sexually comfortable with themselves and let guys know that they are in charge, which was a very powerful and freeing moment in hip-hop even through people were quick to discredit them because how dare you be a woman and talk about sexual pleasure in that manner *rolls eyes*, they paved a lane for women afterwards to say what they wanted without feeling ashamed of themselves and had them owning their truth and both of these ladies had layers to their music and their art beyond sex appeal.
Brown`s third studio album 'Broken Silence' came out in 2001, it saw her matured tremendously. She let her guard down for the world to see her vulnerability and her pain, not an easy task for any rapper -much less a woman. Her bars were hard and heavy and also displayed alot of transparency, one of the tracks that stand out is 'BK Anthem' which was a gritty number that saw her taking twisted pride about her Brooklyn roots even the rough parts of it "B.K. - the home of Biggie and Jay, where ni**as got Will Smith chips, get jiggy all day. Bitches that boost in the city all day, Heckel and Koch, crack spots, federal watch. I grew up here, sip Mo', threw up here, yo the feds snatched two up here, in B.K. Ni**as in the hood in that all blue and grey, Gorillas got rich from stairwells and P.A.."
When Lauryn Hill decided to step out from her group Fugees she went to created one of the most ground breaking albums of all time and her only studio album to date, simply titled "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" which showcased a honest presentation of a female’s view on life and love. She sang and rapped with so much confident about vulnerable themes and also managed push forward a new sound that was emerging at that time called Neo-Soul that she beautifully intertwined with hip-hop. One of the stand out tracks is "Lost Ones" which saw her addressing an ex after a bad break-up and she`s getting everything off her chest, her delivery is so cold and direct and her vocals on the hook are smooth.
Missy Elliott has revolutionised the sound of R&B and hip-hop through her 6 multi-million selling solo albums and has 5 Grammys under her belt which a great achievement especially in a male dominated genre like Hip-hop and the fact she didn`t fit the norm of what the industry thought a star looked made her success even sweeter. She forged her own path which allowed her to showcase her creativity and her colourful personality and flow to match. Her track "Shes Bitch" set the perfect tone for her second album "Da Real World" as the song spoke about giving the word "Bitch" a new and positive and powerful meaning of a strong woman being about her business.
When Eve came on the scene she meant business, she was a pretty girl but was a beast on the mic, eating up any beat she spits on, which is no wonder she described herself as “pit bull in a skirt”. Her charisma and style make her instantly likeable, her lyrics and delivery have all anted up, the Philly girl had everyone in love with her and what she represented through her music had alot of people rooting for her hard, she managed to achieve great success and bless us with four albums, one being "Eve-Olution" that saw her coming into her own and representing her roots with tracks like "Satisfaction" featuring a old skool vibe and smooth production that she ride with so much boldness and sass.
Chicago rapper Shawnna is fucking gem and honestly one of the most talented rappers on the music scene, she knows how to deliver rhymes and ride a beat like a beast and she definitely has alot of potential to be a rap heavy weight one day. Her debut album "Worth Tha Weight" served as a great introduction and it still goes hard 14 years after it was released, especially her track "RPM" which saw her going hard on the heavy beat and displaying why she`s a beast on the mic.
Remy Ma found fame as being a memeber of Terror Squad where she flexed her skills and teased the audience of what they could expect if she would go solo and solo she did with the release of her 2006 debut album "There's Something about Remy" that saw her showcasing her gritty and passionate flow - attacking the beat with no end and showcasing different ranges throughout. But the work I want to highlight is lifted from her third mixtape "I'm Around" that she dropped shortly after she was released from prison in 2014, her track "Go In, Go Off" furthered showed what a bad ass rapper she is, she laid down some heavy bars on a very heavy production that very few can handle, she ate it up and spit out in your face.
Nicki Minaj`s last project "The Pinkprint " finally saw her coming into her own, that whole era was stellar from start to finish but one track I wish featured on the album was "Lookin Ass" instead of being put on Young Money`s compilation "Rise of an Empire". The track is hands down her best musical offerings to date, she delivered her most aggressive and uncompromising deliveries in her music career. This was what we`ve been waiting for from her since she stepped on the scene.
Birmingham rapper Lady Leshurr is the illest female rapper on the music scene, she embodies all the elements that hip-hop is based on and more as she has a powerful and colourful flow with smart lyrics and is extremely passionate about her craft. Every time she puts out material her work displays alot of growth and her delivery is so raw and it makes you want to hear more and her Queen Speech Eps have laid down such a solid foundation for her to roll up with an album, which is hopefully coming soon, it will further showcase her rap skills and push British rap music forward.
On her track "R.I.P" she attacked the beat like a beast, my wig shifted a bit as I listen to her drag someone with lines like "I'll Billie Jean that gyal, moonwalk on her, she will get bad up. Gyal a get a slap 'pon da head back, neckback get tan up. You're a big girl now, stand up, don't call for me, get rang up. How do you mean that ain't all fibs? Swear on your life now, hand up. Tell the truth, beg you stop yapping away, lie so much should give your mattress away. You can feel me like the clap and the bass, bars hurt like a slap in the face."
Lola Monroe went from everyone`s favorite video vixens to full-blown rapper, but it didn't exactly happen overnight. She released a few mixtapes before people started taking her seriously and she proved herself to be a huge threat as her delivery is so raw and grimy and rides a beat so smoothly, she`s like a great mixture of Nicki Minaj and Foxy Brown with a touch of Trina, her freestyle had me hooked from the first second she opened her mouth and look forward to seeing delivering a full length studio album.
