I honestly think that “Cassanova Brown” is the greatest song Teena Marie ever recorded as she delivered such a heartfelt and powerful vocal performance and the song was based on a real life situation that she was caught up in.
The song speaks about the relationship between Teena and her mentor, Rick James which started off professionally and they got closer and closer and fell in fell in love and began a love affair of many sorts. Secretly engaged for only a few weeks and then she discovered that she was actually James’ mistress, as he was in a long-term relationship with Alfie Davidson. They ended their relationship and tried to maintain professional relationship, which is the hardest thing as you already crossed the line and got caught up in your feelings as the love he provided felt so good yet it was all a lie. She put all that in this song that you can actually feel her emotions seep through your speakers. I got chills the very first time I truly listened this song.
