Missy Elliott`s classic debut album "Supa Dupa Fly" saw an artist fearlessly owning her image and her sound and never conforming to fit the narrow-minded image of what the industry thinks a superstar should look and sound like. With the help of her partner in crime Timbaland, she produced a masterpiece of album that featured a revolutionary sound that took Hip Hop and R&B music to the next level, showcasing their creativity and their passion for music.
The album charted at number three on the Billboard 200 and topped the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The phenomenal album serves as a blueprint for both Timbaland and Missy’s later music, displaying their creativity and originality and the era was accompanied by groundbreaking music videos.
Grammy nominated poet-singer-songwriter The Floacist of British duo Floetry has nothing beautiful words to say about Missy Elliott. "I think that Missy is the absolutely incredible artist in the complete sense of the word, creatively, visually this woman has the code for heat. I mean just taking the art form of hit singles as we of the video era MTV…post Michael Jackson…Missy Elliott never ever, ever misses."
"She is amazing, her mind must be a collage of visual art, not many artists write with such a depth of visual articulation. I mean it’s one thing to be able to create an amazing song but she’s just so precise with the hit making manifestation process.
"From “The Rain”, all the way through her fantastic career, (respect to ‘Sister’ as well). Missy has continually made the high point hit of any rave, club or house party selection and that’s not even mentioning the heat that she’s blessed others with. I was just having a conversation today about how much I love music that makes people dance and she made me dance in my bedroom. It feels great to give her, her rightful props on this blog…it’s a power up to revel in her genius and her accomplishments. You are a force of nature sister and I for one, genuinely love you."
Missy Elliott is one of the most influential female artist of all time because ever she stepped into the music scene she has proved to be one of the most creative, exciting and engaging hip-hop acts of all time, she came into it knowing what type of artist she wanted to be and what type of vision she wanted to put out and never placed herself in a box to be appealing to people. She was just doing her own thing without entertaining limitations that the industry puts on female artist to be something they are.
Using her platform in the music industry to pave way for more people to be creative and be themselves and also shed light on female songwriters and producers because when she is not putting out her own music, she always in the studio writing and producing hit records for some of the most talented artist in the music industry - creating that timeless, quality music with heart.
“She’s not your typical female in music: she’s not a size two, and it’s about her talent not about what she has to offer in terms of the size of her breasts or the tightness are her abs. I had the chance to talk to her this past year and she’s very comfortable with who she is. She is so confident in herself she doesn’t feel the pressure of caving in to what society says a typical female artist should be. You can be who you are. People don’t have to define who you are as a person. She grew up in a situation where she could have gone the opposite way but she always believed that she had talent, and even though people told her to lose weight, she came out with a video where she’s wearing a plastic bag and the plastic bag is inflated. She also has her own label that she runs, she has discovered many great artists, and on top of that, she produces for artists that have gone on to sell millions of records.”- Namugenyi Kiwanuka
“Missy is influential because Missy is unique. I define influential as the impact someone has on other people. You haven’t seen it yet but it’s Missy Elliott. Missy and Timbaland’s beats are going to keep rap interesting over the next couple of years. Missy is one of the few artists that does what she does without sounding like other people. Nobody’s done what Missy Elliott’s done because they can’t. She still breaks down barriers, and doesn’t fit the mold. I think the reason she’s so influential is because Missy is a true artist. People can’t find the next Missy Elliott, like you can’t find the next Van Gogh; you just have to look for someone who is good. You’re never going to be able to do what she does because she is one of those people, those truly gifted people. I think she’s more talented than anybody out there, regardless of gender.”- George Stroumboulopoulos
“ I think the one artist who is influential in terms of her music is Missy Elliott. She’s very innovative, creative, and unique. Missy does things that artists have never done before and she’s breaking new ground.” -Rick Campanelli
Missy Elliott is the bestselling female rapper in the world, with 5 Grammy-awards under her belt and five platinum albums and one double platinum album, which is amazing in a scene dominated by men. Elliott came on the music scene in 1997 with one of the craziest music videos in musical history called “The Rain” that showcased her creativity and originality and featured elements of surrealism that push the boundaries of music videos.
The Hype Williams directed music video saw Missy playing a very active role in the making of the video, to empower fellow artists to discover new and broader ways of showcasing their music and to think outside the box.
The most iconic thing outfit in the video has got to be the big garbage bag she wore throughout the video which was inspired by a moment in her early career when she was told that she would never make it because of her weight, she decided to embrace her features and confidently show them off in the video but she blew her size up in the garbage bag as like a statement to say that she was not gonna degrade herself to fit the narrow-minded idea of what the industry thought a superstar should look like.
She went on to produce more amazing visuals that further showcased her creativity with no limits insight.
