Let’s talk about how important Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott is for the culture. She is a “womanist” personified, to the millionth degree. Whether telling men to step their game up to provide in “Hot Boyz,” or letting ladies know to “stay ahead of the game” and get it how they live in “Work It;” her body of work overwhelmingly empowers ladies to expect the best from others, and from themselves.
She has always been about female unity; especially within the very male-dominated genre of Hip Hop. Throughout the life span of her career, she’s never shied away from teaming up with other ladies like Aaliyah, Da Brat, Lil Kim, Lil Mo, Mel B, Nicole Wray, Tweet, Ciara, Janet Jackson, Fantasia and more! Her message has always been about empowering one another as women, and stressing how we all have room to shine and be great.
Her childhood story is a sobering, but an all-to-relatable one for many women - especially black ones. In spite of what she has survived her spirit shines so bright, her immense talent remains irrefutable, and impact undeniable.
We celebrate Melissa today, and everyday; honoring her greatness, and invaluable contributions to female empowerment.
